Celebrating Rural Women: Nourishing the Nation, One Step at a Time
Annually, the international community observes the International Day of Rural Women on 15 October. This year, the Province of Lomami assumed the limelight with a momentous celebration on 8 November, spearheaded by the Provincial Ministry of Gender, Family, and Children in Kamende, the epicentre of Kabinda. Guided by the discerning leadership of Governor Iron-Van Kalombo Musoko, this event served as a testament to the priceless contributions of rural women.
A Day of Themes and Celebrations
The national theme for this year, “Rural Women, Nourishing Mothers of the Nation,” was particularly resonant in Lomami, where it was complemented by the provincial theme, “Rural Women, Key Players in Food Security.” The day was celebrated with considerable pomp and circumstance thanks to the generous support of Enabel, the Belgian development agency. Enabel, renowned for its impactful initiatives in Kabinda and Ngandajika, contributed its expertise in institutional support and agriculture, thereby ensuring the success of the event.
In a scene evocative of a vibrant festival, the folk group Selema established the atmosphere with their rhythmic beats. Women’s associations from rural areas, adorned in vibrant attire, performed traditional dances, exemplifying the rich cultural heritage of Kabinda, a region of Lomami where Enabel is actively engaged in promoting agricultural and institutional initiatives.
Inspiring Words and Engaging Debates
The day’s activities encompassed not only festivities but also reflection and dialogue. A series of inspiring speeches were delivered by a number of local leaders, including the territory administrator of Kabinda, the head of the provincial gender division, and representatives from Enabel. The provincial minister for gender, a source of inspiration for many, presided over an engaging conference-debate.
Lauriane Mujinga’s Impactful Speech
Lauriane Mujinga, a prominent figure in the field of gender advocacy, delivered an impassioned address on the significance of this day, underscoring that it was formally established by the United Nations General Assembly on 18 December 2007. “Rural women are not merely contributors; they are the foundation of food production and natural resource management,” she emphasised.
Enabel’s Continued Commitment
François Kalembo, Enabel’s territorial policy officer, reiterated these views, emphasising Enabel’s unwavering support. “Enabel is privileged to contribute to this commemoration, in alignment with our mission of supporting inclusive and sustainable development. “Our ongoing projects for the period 2023-2027 will continue to provide support for agricultural initiatives, female entrepreneurship and skills enhancement for women, with a particular focus on rural areas in Lomami,” he stated.
A Marketplace of Achievements
Furthermore, the celebration constituted a feast for the senses, with a plethora of stands showcasing a kaleidoscope of vibrant organic and market garden products. The stalls served as a testament to the efforts and commitment of rural women from a range of associations. Visitors were observed to be filling their baskets with local delicacies, thereby reducing the available funds in their piggy banks, which were used to support a worthy cause.
The event was attended by a number of notable figures, including Eudoxie Milemba, the provincial deputy; the provincial minister of ITPR; customary chiefs; and the Chief of the Kabinda sector. The attendance of these individuals served to highlight the significance of the occasion and the continued efforts to improve the status of rural women.
A Light-hearted Remark with a Serious Message
One attendee made an amusing observation: “If rural women can feed a nation, why not let them run one?” The day was a compelling illustration of the potential and capabilities of rural women, who continue to nourish not just their families, but entire communities.
