The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Head of MONUSCO, Maman Sidikou, is closely following the political situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and, in particular, the Recent statements by several key national actors.

The Special Representative wishes to remind all signatories of the 31 December 2016 Agreement of their obligation to implement fully and in good faith this Agreement.

The United Nations recalls that this agreement is the only viable and peaceful way out of the current impasse and results in peaceful and credible elections.

“It is the CENI that has the primary responsibility to organise these elections in accordance with the Constitution and the Agreement of 31 December 2016. I therefore call on the CENI to publish without delay a formal and consensual calendar for the elections, Organisation of these elections, “Sidikou said.

The Special Representative urges the Government to continue and ensure the full and speedy implementation of the measures of descriptiveness provided for in the Agreement of 31 December 2016 in order to create the political environment and other necessary conditions for the holding of elections.

“These measures of descriptiveness are essential ingredients to promote a true concord between all the Congolese in this crucial phase of Congo’s history,” added the Special Representative.

The United Nations also urges political parties to redouble their efforts to find, through dialogue, a solution to the persistent deadlock.

In this regard, Special Representative Maman Sidikou reaffirms the determination to continue his good offices in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2348 and to work with all national actors and regional and international partners Full and faithful implementation of the Agreement of 31 December 2016.
